Chris “Jesus” Ferguson non ha nulla a che vedere con gli altri giocatori a cui ci siamo dedicati durante il “Where Are They Now”. Non è una sorpresa, probabilmente perché è il giocatore che abbiamo cronologizzato che vanta più successo, almeno in questa serie. Sin dalla sua prima apparizione ad un evento delle World Series of Poker nel 1993, nessun altro giocatore ha vinto così tante volte quanto lui. Inoltre, il numero dei suoi tornei live facilmente sovrasta qualsiasi altro giocatore nel mondo. Tra il 2004 ed il 2005 soltanto, è stato riportato che Ferguson ha partecipato a circa 150 tornei. I quali non includono il suo gioco online, dove può essere visto giocare regolarmente. Non funziona sempre così, ma nel caso di Ferguson, uno dei più riconosciuti giocatori al mondo è anche uno dei più impegnati, dimostrando quanto il suo sia un vero amore per il gioco.La storia di Ferguson comincia diversamente da altre biografie in questa serie per il semplice fatto che lui è nato da genitori ricchi e di successo. Chris Ferguson è nato l’11 Aprile 1963, da due laureati in matematica. L’abilità di suo padre era in nella teoria del gioco e nella statistica, entrambe ovviamente fondamentali nel poker. Poichè Ferguson condivide con suo padre l’interesse nella statistica e nella teoria del gioco è stato affascinato dal gioco del poker e da tutte le differenti possibilità che il gioco offriva per lo studio. Nonostante Ferguson abbia cominciato a giocare intorno ai 10 anni, era più un hobby o un interesse passeggero che un intenso desiderio. Negli anni del suo liceo ha cominciato a giocare a poker un po’ di più con i compagni, ma come i suoi genitori, Ferguson era più interessato al mondo accademico che al mondo del poker essendo un ragazzo.
All’inizio del 1982 è entrato all’Università della California, a Los Angeles per prendere una laurea in scienze informatiche. Dopo 17 anni, prima come laureando, poi 12 come laureato 12, ha finalmente preso il suo PHD in scienze informatiche.
Durante il suo soggiorno al college ha cominciato a giocare a poker sempre più spesso. Ferguson ha una interessante teoria riguardo il poker. Credeva di poter imparare molto più velocemente giocando a livelli più alti di quanto avrebbe fatto se avesse giocato con buy-in bassi. Siccome ha avuto il privilegio di crescere in un ambiente ricco, questa era una teoria che poteva permettersi di sperimentare. Invece di lavorare per costruirsi poco a poco la sua strada, Ferguson ha cominciato immediatamente a giocare con buy-in dai duecento dollari in su.
Un altro privilegio di cui godeva Ferguson era il posto in cui viveva. Avendo la scuola a Los Angeles, era giusto in mezzo ad alcuni dei migliori club di poker del Paese. Uno in cui spese maggior parte del suo tempo era il Gardena Poker room. Era li a metà degli anni 90 che cominciò il suo successo in una grande varietà di giochi, inclusi Pai Gow, Stud, e Limit Hold’em.
Mentre giocava dal vivo a livelli medi di buy-ins, soleva utilizzare internet per fare pratica con alcune delle sue strategie. Infatti, usava una delle prime versioni di poker mai apparse su internet, sotto il canale IRC. Qui giocava solo per soldi, ma avrebbe speso ore studiando ed analizzando il gioco mentre prendeva meticolosamente appunti durante il processo. Durante quel periodo ha anche cominciato a creare simulazioni al computer per contribuire alla sua conoscenza del gioco, cosa che fa ancora oggi. Questo era prima che ci fossero software ad aiutare ad avere queste statistiche, per cui anche se il lavoro doveva essere straziante, avrà sicuramente pagato i dividenti alla fine.
Forgiato dalla sua conoscenza teorica del poker e da una memoria fotografica, ha realizzato che il poker poteva essere un gioco che avrebbe potuto fargli guadagnare molti soldi. Dopo aver finalmente ottenuto il suo dottorato nel 1999, Ferguson ha cominciato a concentrarsi a tempo pieno sul poker e non c’è voluto molto perchè ne seguisse il successo.
Ferguson aveva già trovato il successo giocando alle WSOP, guadagnando il suo primo piazzamento a premio al primo evento del 1995. Comunque a causa dei suoi studi avrebbe giocato pochi eventi per volta prima di completare il suo tempo all’UCLA. Nel 1999 ha cominciato un fitto programma che continua anche oggi. In quell’anno si è piazzato in tre WSOP events oltre a vincere la California State Championship in Pot Limit Hold’em. Comunque, l’anno 2000 sarebbe stato conosciuto come l’anno di “Gesù.”
Ferguson ha cominciato le WSOP del 2000 vincendo il suo primo braccialetto in assoluto nel $2,500 Seven Card Stud event, portando a casa $151,000 dollari. Nonostante questo fosse la sua vincita più alta nella sua carriera, era solo una parte di quello che lo aspettava solo alcuni giorni più tardi.
la corsa di Ferguson nelle 2000 WSOP è stata considerata una delle più brillanti nella storia. È stato detto che mentre giocava in modo aggressivo, è stato anche capace di grossi bluff, mentre sembrava penetrare nella mente dei suoi avversari per evitare di venire bluffato a sua volta. Ecco perché è stato considerato perdonabile quando fu capace di succhiare via a T.J. Cloutier con un heads-up e portarsi a casa il titolo del 2000 WSOP Main Event
Cloutier era andato in all in con A-Q ed è stato chiamato da Ferguson ed il suo A-9. dopo quattro carte ininfluenti che hanno lasciato Cloutier, enormemente favorito, a raddoppiare ed avere la chip leader quasi sempre, Ferguson è stato capace di giocare sul 9 al river. Cosa abbastanza interessante, “Jesus” è un ateo, per cui sarebbe sbagliato dire che Ferguson abbia pregato al river per un nove, come spesso il clichè vuole che sia. In qualsiasi modo si voglia chiamarla, fortuna, preghiera, o teoria, Ferguson ha vinto il Main Event, ed è diventato il primo giocatore a vincere 1.5 milioni di dollari all’evento, con un precedente record di “solo” un milione.
La corsa di Ferguson è continuata l’anno dopo, guadagnando il suo terzo braccialetto alle WSOP nel $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better event. Ha vinto due ulteriori braccialetti delle WSOP nel 2003, arrivando ad un totale di cinque braccialetti, numero che non è cresciuto finora. E si è piazzato per un totale di 56 volte nelle WSOP. Ha anche vinto il titolo al World Poker Tour e si è piazzato a premio per 7 ulteriori volte in questi eventi. Ad oggi, ha vinto circa 7.5 milioni di dollari giocando in tornei.
Una delle cose più interessanti che Ferguson abbia fatto è stato trasformare 1 dollaro in $20,000 e 0 in $10,000. Ferguson dice di aver trasformato 1 dollaro in $20,000 come una sfida personale lungo un periodo di sei mesi. Ne ha sentito parlare per la prima volta durante la trasmissione di un torneo di poker, e dopo aver ricevuto dubbi sul suo reclamo ha detto che avrebbe fatto qualcosa di simile. Durante l’anno passato, su Full-Tilt Poker, un sito web che ha attualmente aiutato a progettare, ha trasformato 0 in $10,000, una ispiratione per tutti i giocatori che non vogliono avere molti soldi bloccati in un sito di poker. Ferguson inizialmente ha giocato freerolls, e dopo aver vinto un paio di dollari ha cominciato a giocare in tavoli cash con buy-in molto bassi. Nonostante abbia vinto la sfida, ha continuato, raddoppiando il traguardo dei $10,000.
Ferguson probabilmente detiene anche il merito di essere il migliore giocatore di heads-up del mondo. Ferguson è finito al secondo posto nel 2005 e nel 2006 nel National Heads-Up Tournament, prima di arrivare finalmente al primo posto nel 2008 con la vittoria. Il suo record di 16-3 è sicuramente il migliore nella storia del torneo.
Un altro elemento che ha reso così popolare Ferguson è la sua abilità di lanciare una carta da gioco a circa 50 miglia all’ora, e con una disarmante precisione. Ha mostrato le sue abilità, tagliando banana e carote a metà da una distanza di più di 10 piedi.
Inoltre, quando non è ai tavoli di poker, lo si può trovare a ballare. Esatto, ballare. Visto che al UCLA era il presidente di uno swing dancing club. Continua ad essere un ballerino di swing attivo e lo considera il suo hobby preferito.
